  • Solution
A new IT architecture based on the Oracle portfolio.

Obasi develops software for the healthcare industry, focusing on automation and optimization throughout the organization, always keeping the patient and service delivery at the center. What sets Obasi apart organizationally is that its clients sit on the board of directors, allowing them to contribute to the company’s vision and future.

To further improve their software solutions, Obasi wants to renew its IT architecture and tooling. They rely on Oracle technology, having based their software on Oracle databases with Oracle Forms & Reports for years. The high development speed and strong backward compatibility are their biggest advantages. However, this model is at the end of its lifecycle, and the older technology often poses a challenge when recruiting new technical profiles. Obasi and its clients expect a stable solution with a long-term perspective, without losing the efforts made in the past. Seeking advice, Obasi approached Contribute. Together, we will determine the appropriate new IT architecture using the Oracle portfolio.

Concept and solution

We begin by assessing the requirements: what should the new infrastructure be capable of? We link this to the knowledge needed and the knowledge already available. Based on this, several suggestions emerge. We then delve deeper into the possibilities, strengths, and weaknesses of various technologies. Initially, we expected a choice between Oracle ADF, JET, or Angular with REST services. These solutions closely align with the applications Obasi offers to its clients, administrative tools where forms and data entry are central. However, Obasi ultimately chose Oracle APEX.
Alongside the new IT architecture, Obasi has also developed a new vision for its offerings. The Oracle Forms applications are stable, functioning as expected, and will continue to do so in the future. Additionally, Obasi wants to offer lightweight, modular applications to enable remote work or access via a web browser, delivering software that is even more tailored to the specialized needs of their clients.

Oracle APEX emerged as the ideal solution. It is not only perfect for visual, lightweight applications but also has a PL/SQL structure, making it compatible with the current infrastructure. Existing code can be reused, and there are no additional licensing costs. Furthermore, this JavaScript technology is an attractive factor in the search for new employees, as it ensures the knowledge of the current staff remains relevant. Additionally, it is an open technology that allows for the integration of plug-ins or other frameworks. Finally, Obasi’s clients do not need to make any infrastructure changes to adopt this technology. To help Obasi get started with APEX, we set up a 5-day workshop. Since the foundational knowledge is already in place, we quickly focused on the new features and capabilities that the APEX framework offers. The workshop was tailored to a small team that will take the lead in using APEX and later share their knowledge throughout the organization. We also provided suggestions regarding the architectural setup and development approach with APEX. Given Obasi’s in-depth Oracle knowledge, they are handling the implementation themselves.
