Sabam is the Belgian association for authors, composers, and publishers. Its mission is to collect, distribute, administer, and manage all copyright royalties in Belgium and in other countries with reciprocal agreements. They cover various disciplines, including music, as well as performing arts such as theater, dance, and comedy.

As a part of their mission, Sabam manages licenses for temporary events or contracts for permanent establishments. Users must declare the licenses they are using or planning to use, while Sabam ensures that artists receive fair compensation. To facilitate accurate license declarations, Sabam relies on a digital portal called MyUnisono. Contribute developed this web application and is responsible for its maintenance.

Digital portal for license declarations

Through MyUnisono, users can register declarations, simulate costs, and make payments instantly. Previously, this process was handled manually and by mail, making it slow and administratively intensive. With the revamped online platform, users can now easily log in and check the status of all their declarations.

MyUnisono can process various types of declarations, including one-time payments for events and contracts for daily use. When submitting a declaration, users must answer a series of questions, such as which artists will be played, the expected number of attendees, and the event’s revenue. Based on this information, MyUnisono generates a cost estimate.

Enhanced user experience and efficiency

Recently, Contribute added the option for direct payments within MyUnisono. Customers now receive an immediate overview of the estimated costs and can complete the payment directly on the platform. Previously, users had to wait for a response via postal mail or email.

The updated application enhances both the user experience for customers and efficiency for Sabam itself. “Administration and invoicing have been simplified. The digital process is faster and more cost-effective. As a result, we have significantly increased our level of e-invoicing, which is a major advantage for us,” confirms Stijn Billen, Application Owner for Licensing at Sabam.

“On top of that, the updated version of MyUnisono allows us to strengthen our customer relationships. The application ensures that customers receive all the necessary information. When we were still working offline, we didn’t have that certainty. During the COVID period, we were also able to better support our customers during difficult times and respond more quickly to their needs.”

The efficiency of Oracle APEX

Oracle APEX was chosen to rebuild the application. Sabam was already using an Oracle Database and other Oracle technologies, making the decision to implement another Oracle solution a logical one.

Oracle APEX not only aligned well with Sabam’s existing technologies but also allowed for rapid application development. Additionally, it was a free feature since Sabam already had an Oracle Database. “Contribute was able to move quickly. Thanks to development in APEX, changes can be implemented swiftly, especially compared to other technologies we currently use,” confirms Stijn.

The entire front-end of MyUnisono was developed in Oracle APEX, while the back-end was built using PL/SQL and SQL. For each tariff in MyUnisono, Contribute dynamically generated the corresponding questions, eliminating the need to create separate pages for each tariff. This logic was implemented using PL/SQL.

Contribute ensures optimal performance

In addition to developing the updated application, Contribute is also responsible for maintaining MyUnisono. This includes not only changes and bug fixes but also continuous optimization of the application. Page load times have been improved, and during the COVID period, new modules were added to facilitate refund requests. The application is constantly evolving, and Contribute ensures it remains up to date at all times.
